Engineered carbon fiber tubing by Carbon Fiber Tube Shop (CFTS) is constructed by roll-wrapping multiple layers of 0/90 uni-directional carbon fiber/epoxy prepreg and a single outer layer of twill carbon fabric around a precision ground and polished steel tool that produces relatively tight ID tolerance on the finished tube, typically +.002”/-0”. The outside of our tubing has a slightly textured as-molded or cello finish that is controlled by our material thickness and high tape pressure so the tolerance on the OD is typically +/- .008”. Our carbon fiber tubing features a high percentage of 0-degree (axial) layers, optimizing it for resisting bending loads. We utilize 90-degree (hoop) layers to help the tube resist the splitting that is so common in pultruded carbon tubing. The outer layer of 2x2 twill offers additional benefits as compared to using uni-directional carbon by itself. These benefits include increased durability, improved damage propagation characteristics, attractive cosmetics, and improved split resistance.
